It is intuitively obvious that if something is designed up-front to make it easier to manufacture, it will cost less. This is one of those acknowledged truths that manufacturing companies knowingly repeat. Despite all of the efforts to formalize design for cost, we still read annual reports that military programs are over-running their costs by substantial amounts.
