Rapid Cast Parts – Center of Excellence (RCP–COE)

The Renaissance Services Rapid Cast Parts Center of Excellence is a straightforward solution for foundries and their customers. The RCP-COE systematically removes the burdens that drive cost and lead time for small quantity orders of castings.

At Renaissance, we serve as a system integrator. We emphasize key front-end requirements, such as engineering, technical data generation, tooling, and administrative requirements. By doing this, we’ve established a relationship with a network of foundries, enabling them to do what they do best: Pour hot metal into molds and produce cast products.

How the RCP–COE Grows Capacity

The RCP–COE expands the Aerospace & Defense (A&D) Industrial Base for castings on two levels:

By applying the Renaissance methodology — which has proven its ability to reduce lead times and deliver castings that were thought to be virtually impossible to buy.

  2. By adding non-A&D foundries to the RCP–COE, effectively bringing their capacity to the Defense Industrial Base.

The combined effect grows qualified capacity for the Defense Industrial Base without capital expansion at the individual foundry level. More efficient use of all available capacity serves as a “force multiplier.” This has been proven to reduce lead times for castings by as much as 75%.

This has a corresponding effect on available foundry capacity, leading to the equivalent of 4x to 5x capacity growth, coupled with a more responsive industrial base. As a system integrator, Renaissance directs traffic, alleviates engineering and administrative burdens and bottlenecks, and finds open capacity niches to match the right foundry to the right requirement, including alloys and quantities.

 

 

The Rapid Replacement Parts Process

Renaissance Services has developed a process that allows for rapid delivery of low volume, hard-to-get replacement parts. This process includes:

Reverse Engineering

Reverse engineering can replicate legacy aerospace industry parts when technical data is in short supply. This process consists of converting physical parts into digital representations. Renaissance utilizes cutting-edge, sophisticated tools to establish digital point clouds and provides detailed engineering expertise to get the specifications right. This helps us capture design intent with precision.

Technical Data Packages

A technical data package defines a replacement part’s set of technical requirements. This includes the component’s 2D and 3D geometry, tolerance, materials, special manufacturing processes, and specifications.

Additive Manufacturing

Additive manufacturing (AM) is a popular approach for metal parts. However, using this method typically requires the component’s requalification for A&D prototyping. This can increase lead times and costs, especially for small-volume orders. At Renaissance, we leverage AM to produce ceramic and other tooling to avoid traditional tooling costs and create a path to make a small quantity of parts.

Parts Made From Castings

By combining both AM techniques and more traditional methods, we can provide foundries with molds and related process aids fast and at affordable rates. This allows legacy castings to move to the front of the queue when the foundries pour metal.
